Make no mistake about it
On borders, honest mistakes, and the need for NATO to rally
Russia's incursion into Polish airspace with at least 17 drones was several things. But on one thing, Polish leadership is emphatic: It was not a mistake.
■ Russia has obviously been using drones relentlessly in its attacks against Ukraine. And Ukraine does share a border with Poland. But if the Russian ambassador to the UN says their drones couldn't have reached Poland by accident, then it's time to assume that what happened was a deliberate probing attack.
■ As dreadful as this is to contemplate, we are compelled to assume it is true unless proven otherwise. The perpetrator has done nothing to earn the benefit of the doubt.
■ It's an awful reality that the whole continent of Europe is under much more of a direct threat than was the case for the last 30 years. A test of Poland's air defenses isn't just a goof or a lark -- it's an obvious escalatory step. NATO needs to be clearly and unambiguously unified in putting Russia on notice that an attack on one is an attack on all.
